The movie Soul Surfer was released on April 8th, 2011. I chose to include this movie on The Shelf since it is a true story of determination and courage from the champion surfer Bethany Hamilton. She is nonetheless an inspiration to surfers around the world but also to everyone in the world. She shows us that even with a major life threatning shark attack that left her with only one arm she was still able to continue her journey and follow her biggest dreams. Hamilton courageously overcomes all odds to become a surfing champion once again. She defeated the ones who didn't believe that she could make a comeback after this incident, thanks to her strong will, supportive family, and great friends. I think that everyone should look at her story and realize that anything is possible, no matter what life throws at you. She is definitely one of my biggest role models because of how she overcame this life-changing challenge, and I am so happy that she shared her story to the world. This movie is definitely a must-see, athlete or not.

After watching this movie, I quickly realized that Bethany Hamilton's situation could have been much worst. From this shark attack almost taking her life, to becoming a surf champion once again, she truly shows what strength is. It opened her eyes to realizing that truly anything is possible, no matter what the circumstances are. She followed her heart to practicing her passion once again, surfing. She was surrounded by her family and friends - her support network whole helped her battle through this difficult time. I look up to Hamilton so much, because she teaches all of us to never give up on our dreams. No matter how hard the journey is, what obstacles you face, you can always achieve the destination you want. I truly recommend that everyone watch this movie. I felt inspired and reflected on my own personal dreams after watching this movie. She is once again a true act of pure strength, determination, and most importantly courage. She defeated all odds that didn't believe in her comeback, and proved that she was capable of doing so, with only one arm. This story truly shows that Bethany Hamilton is a true "Soul Surfer" and that she never gave up on her passion.
